What the two numbers mean
The top number, called systolic pressure, measures pressure when the heart beats. The bottom number, called diastolic pressure, measures pressure when the heart rests between beats.
Why high blood pressure matters
High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms, but it can strain the heart and blood vessels over time. It is linked with higher risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and other complications.
How to monitor it well
Use a properly fitting cuff, sit quietly for a few minutes, keep your feet flat, and measure at consistent times. Bring your readings to your consultation so your clinician can interpret patterns rather than one isolated number.
What helps support healthier pressure
Reducing salt, being active, sleeping well, limiting alcohol, avoiding nicotine, managing weight, and taking prescribed medication consistently can all support blood pressure control.
